REACTIONS BETWEEN DILUTE HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND SULFURIC ACID WITH METALS:

Acids react with most Metals to produce Salt and Hydrogen Gas:

  Metal    +   Hydrochloric  Acid     →     Metal Chloride    +    Hydrogen

  Metal    +        Sulfuric  Acid         →     Metal Sulfate       +    Hydrogen

PRACTICAL:

INVESTIGATING REACTIONS OF METALS WITH ACIDS

METHOD:

  • Add Acid into a conical flask
  • Add Metal into conical flask
  • Observe reaction and the rate in which bubbles are produced

RESULTS:

MAGNESIUM

  • Reacts quickly
  • Bubbles of Gas
  • Magnesium disappears
  • Exothermic
  • Colourless solution formed

HCL : Mg + 2HCl MgCl2 + H2
H2SO4 : Mg + H2SO4 MgSO4 + H2

ZINC

  • Reacts more slowly
  • Bubbles of Gas
  • Zinc disappears
  • Colourless solution formed

HCL : Zn + 2HCl ZnCl2 + H2
H2SO4 : Zn + H2SO4 ZnSO4 + H2

IRON

  • Reacts more slowly than zinc
  • Bubbles of Gas
  • Iron disappears
  • Pale green solution formed

HCL : Fe + 2HCl FeCl2 + H2
H2SO4 : Fe + H2SO4 FeSO4 + H2
